Time: 1 hour. The track from the wharf is a wide 4WD trail which was once used by packhorses to carry supplies to the huts. After around 15 minutes of walking, it passes Glade House, the official start of the Milford Track. The track crosses the Clinton River via a large swing bridge, and continues along the true right (west) side.

A snapshot of Glade House, taken more than a century ago, has come to light. Glade House marks the start of the Milford Track at the head of Lake Te Anau. Glade House can be seen from here too: a collection of tiny boxes next to the Clinton River. The track sidles from the pass for a couple of kilometres before heading directly downhill beneath Pt1543. When the bushline is reached, the track begins a final zigzag and then eases up for a final stretch of virtually flat terrain to Glade House.
